The fur
STEP I
Just use a transparent, black brush and just draw strokes. Then use white over the top to distinguish them.
Important is that you can see the direction of the fur will go.
/Tutorial
ALIVE –
The fur
STEP II
Then get smear too and smear it. Around the edges and following the flow! There should be no flat areas.
Keep smearing till the fur is like in
the sample.
/Tutorial
ALIVE –
The fur
STEP III
Now draw ridiculously long bits on the entire outline of the thing that needs to be furry. BUT not the entire outline, just the bits that would have fluff visibly sticking up or hanging down from them...
/Tutorial
ALIVE –
The fur
STEP IV
Get a large, blurry eraser and
erase the ends of the fluff.
But be sure that the eraser is
not too big to make the
non-fluff transparent.
/Tutorial
ALIVE –
The fur
STEP V
Now use black and white brushes. 1-3px brushes to make the flur look smooth... Make long confident strokes in the direction of the fur like in the sample. Alter the transparency of your brush as you need.
/Tutorial
ALIVE –
The fur
STEP VI
Lock the transparency if you have a newer version of photoshop. And then use a large white blurry edged brush (airbrush) at the bits of your thingy that are in light. Choose a transparency that fits the mood of the entire picture. Then use a black airbrush in the darker bits.
/Tutorial
ALIVE –
The fur
STEP VII
Get a 1px brush at a harder transparency than in step before.
Draw all the fancy little individual hairs. There shouldn't be any flat areas. This is the final step to finishing your painted hairs. Your transparency should still be looked.
/Tutorial
ALIVE –
The fur
STEP VIII
Now you can repeat STEP IV,
but only if you need it.
Unlock the transparency to do it.
/Tutorial
ALIVE –
The fur
STEP IX
You can even enhance the strength of the highlights and shadows... more contrast if you need it.
/Tutorial
ALIVE –
The fur
STEP X
Now make a new layer and set the mode to 'color'. Use 'overlay' mode to make the bits darker or lighter. Use for the highlights another color tone - for the shadows another too. So that the fur doesn't look flat and one colored. That's it. Hope it helps you!
Demon

Photoshop & Surface Studio

Demon
I started to scan the sketch, expanding it and draw the cloth and the background.
Demon
Now I added the main color.
It should be black and white with some copper elements.
Demon
I created a copper texture.
I creased a copper foil and scanned it. Optimized and brought into the circular shapes.
Demon
Now the details of the cloth. Step by step.
Depths and lights.
Demon
Now details of the hair
are added.
Everything should be in flow.
Demon
More lights and shadows for the depth of the cloth.
Demon
Now I have hidden the sketch more so that I can draw
the body.
Demon
Step by step I have drawn
more shadows.
I also drew the hair
in more detail.
Demon
Little by little, I drew the face. I usually start with my eyes.
Demon
More and more...
Demon
Also the shadows of the body are added. The body becomes more plastic and gets a shape.
Demon
Even more depth...
Demon
Now I have also added
the lights.
And of course more details.
Demon
Also some background shapes and lines for more tension.
Demon
Adjustments of the hair, cloth and the background...
Demon
... and now just the final adjustments of brightness. And done.
Thanks for your interest!

Pencil

2013 I've decided to create a mixed media illustration for desktopography.
Traditional drawing, coloured digital.
Started with the pencil drawing on paper, scanned it and colorized it in Photoshop.
/Process steps
Pencil
on paper
At first I've constructed the typography
on with a pencil on paper and vectroized it in illustrator. The Typo should be alive and fits
to the illustration.

STEP I
First of all I have fixed the composition/
idea. Only a few lines to visualise it.
/Process steps
Deception
STEP II
Then I have begun to paint the main element. I have decided that the source of light should be on top left corner.
But one must note that in the water are always a lot of reflexions...
/Process steps
Deception
STEP III
Then I have continued the painting of the 'fish'. And I have tried to bring the tail fin in the form of the desktopography logo.
/Process steps
Deception
STEP IV
Now I have started to paint also the background. Plants, stones etc. . .
I also have to place started
the second source of light.
/Process steps
Deception
STEP V
The 'fish' should look golden.
As a contrast to the deep-blue water.
/Process steps
Deception
STEP VI
Now I have started to paint the details.
To give the 'fish' a good form. Fins. Scales.
A Flow. And I made the fins more transparent.
/Process steps
Deception
STEP VII
Now I had the main element almost ready.
I painted a few more details and textures...
/Process steps
Deception
STEP VIII
Then I have begun to paint the main element. I have decided that the source of light should be on top left corner.
But one must note that in the water are always a lot of reflexions...
/Process steps

STEP IX
Now the background.
I have painted more water reflexions and light reflexions on the ground.
/Process steps
Deception
STEP X
Now there came the jellyfishes. Started to paint with this one at first...
Two more. For the depth of the picture.
/Process steps
Deception
STEP XII
And the last two jellyfishes.
But for the better balance of the picture
I needed something else... The ray...
/Process steps
Deception
STEP XIII
The jellyfishes still had to take up the golden color, so that the picture is more harmonious.
And I painted more details like bubbles etc...
/Process steps
Deception
STEP XIV
And then I finished it with some more reflections on the ground and some 'stuff'
that swims around.
Sharpened it and worked on the depth with the blur tool too. And it is done!
